Sanlorenzo, a pioneer in the journey of responsible development in the yachting sector, returns to the FuoriSalone in Milan with a project that subtly and sophisticatedly tells the story of the future of boat propulsion.
At Design Week 2023, as part of the INTERNI DESIGN RE-EVOLUTION exhibition-event at the University of Milan, Sanlorenzo presents LA MACCHINA IMPOSSIBILE, an installation by Piero Lissoni that interprets the continuous research conducted by the shipyard toward technologically innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of yachting.
The Impossible Machine is an imposing metal sculpture: a complex, highly technological machine, yet defined in detail by a masterful manual craft, just like a yacht. Positioned at the center of the 18th-century courtyard, the entire structure rests on a platform that highlights a mechanism made of propellers and gear wheels. These move thanks to a new hydrogen system powered by green methanol, which Sanlorenzo is developing for the propulsion of its yachts in collaboration with Siemens Energy. It is based on the use of combined reformer/fuel cell modules. This technology will be used to power onboard services on yachts ranging from 24 to 73 meters in length, starting in 2024 with the new 50Steel. This cutting-edge project will represent the first concrete step toward generating carbon-neutral power from new-generation fuels for the entire industry, positioning Sanlorenzo as a trailblazer on the path to sustainable yachting.
Within the context of the Design Re-Evolution exhibition, which explores Evolutionary Thinking as a tool to design both known and unknown, physical and digital, contemporary and future territories, Sanlorenzo presents a project that looks to the future, expressing a new and positive interaction between humans and the environment.
