Sanlorenzo, Associated Partner at Art Basel Miami Beach, presents the work of Tony Lewis

Sanlorenzo arrives in Miami Beach for the final event of the year at the most important modern and contemporary art fair on the global scene. From December 1 to 3, 2022, at the Collectors Lounge of Art Basel Miami Beach, Sanlorenzo presents the artwork Deep Sky Dark Bright Black & commissioned from American artist Tony Lewis. The piece is produced by Sanlorenzo Arts, designed by Piero Lissoni, and curated by Flash Art with the kind collaboration of the MASSIMODECARLO gallery. Part of the Sanlorenzo Arts platform, an active and interactive initiative focused on urgent contemporary global issues, Deep Sky Dark Bright Black & represents the artist’s exploration of drawing as a means of communication. For Sanlorenzo, Tony Lewis has conceived three new works at the intersection of semiotics, abstraction and drawing. Lewis uses a graphite pencil and paper as his preferred tools to trace and generate linguistic narratives that reflect on gestural expression. Deep Sky Dark Bright Black & is an original work consisting of three separate pieces in graphite and putty on paper, a literal and conceptual foundation in the artist’s work. Tony Lewis rubs, crumples and scatters the graphite across the surfaces, allowing the dust to accumulate into a series of textures and patterns. The artist employs a dynamic stenographic gesture to mix fragments of text and selected words within a drawing, imprinting mysterious codes and structured maps onto the paper. These marks constitute a journey through the roots of drawing, engaging form, line, color and language. The gestural lines appear as abstract symbols, while each word outlines a statement on race, power and communication, often referring to historical events or situations. Lewis creates a narrative that constantly shifts between history and autobiography, often beginning his research by selecting texts from popular culture, which he then recontextualizes, extracting imperceptible fragments and letting new meanings emerge. By deconstructing language and undermining its authority, he exposes the inequities and inadequacies of existing linguistic and power structures. Sanlorenzo’s ongoing research, where the sophisticated synthesis of design, technology and engineering intertwines with art and contemporaneity, has progressively led the shipyard toward new creative languages, culminating in the creation of a true platform for artistic projects. Sanlorenzo Arts is increasingly establishing itself as a stable investigative tool capable of offering new perspectives on the most important issues of today, tackling them through the eyes, poetry, and wonder of the arts, embarking on a long conversation with artists, designers, and thinkers.
