Bluegame, a brand of the Sanlorenzo group, and the New York Yacht Club American Magic, the challenger in the 37th edition of the America's Cup to be held in Barcelona in 2024, have signed an agreement for the design and construction of the first hydrogen-powered "chase boat" built according to the strict requirements of the event's Protocol.
For Bluegame, this is a remarkable achievement, accomplished after taking on an extremely complex challenge from a design and technical standpoint. Considering that the boat is only 10 meters long and must reach a speed of 50 knots with a range of 180 nautical miles, the regulations for the first time require the exclusive use of hydrogen propulsion combined with foils.
Hydrogen as a propulsion system is a groundbreaking innovation in recreational boating and a first for Bluegame. This follows less than a year after another memorable agreement made by the parent company Sanlorenzo, signed with Siemens Energy, for the creation of the first 50-meter superyacht with hydrogen-powered electricity generation and Fuel Cell technology, set to be launched in 2024. This dual extraordinary achievement undeniably confirms Sanlorenzo's leadership in technological and sustainable innovation.
To ensure the success of the project, Bluegame relied on a team of exceptional expertise, with members who have all been involved in the design of the last America's Cup editions, gaining the highest level of know-how in areas such as structures and composites, foil design, and software management that controls the stability of these highly sophisticated flying boats.
What makes the agreement particularly rewarding is being chosen by the most prestigious and exclusive Yacht Club in the world, which made history in the America's Cup by winning the first edition in 1851 and holding the record for 132 years, the longest winning streak in sports history. Bluegame feels the full responsibility of standing alongside American Magic to bring the cup back to America.
It was Luca Santella, head of Bluegame's product strategy, who had the vision of this dream, now realized. Luca Santella commented on the agreement with American Magic:
"It’s hard for me to contain the emotion that comes from the recognition of Bluegame's design value, the confirmation of the brand’s unyielding unconventional DNA, and the allure of this legendary competition for a former professional sailor like I once was."
